The Medieval Village of Suvereto.

A journey through one of the most beautiful old villages in Italy.

Suvereto

It is a charming medieval village, still surrounded by ancient walls, located near other interesting places such as Populonia, an Etruscan city, and Campiglia Marittima.

We are in the south-eastern part of the province of Livorno, in the heart of the Val di Cornia. Characterized by a particularly pleasant climate, Suvereto lies on the gentle slopes that extend from the Cornia River towards the Metalliferous Hills. From these first hills, there is a splendid view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Gulf of Follonica, and the island of Elba, while behind them lie roads and paths leading to Massa Marittima and Volterra.

The area is rich in cork oaks, centuries-old olive trees, and vineyards, reflecting the traditional agricultural vocation of the area, alongside forestry and livestock farming.
The historic village of Suvereto surprises visitors with its concentration of monuments and attractions in a relatively small area, making it an ideal destination for pleasant walks.
A pentagonal wall with eight towers surrounds the charming historic center. Among the most important buildings is the Rocca, once the castle’s garrison, which stands on the hill overlooking the town. The Palazzo Comunale, dating back to the 13th century, is considered one of the most fascinating examples of civil architecture in Italy and a symbol of the town’s independence.

The picturesque Cloister of San Francesco hosts annual concerts, shows, and historical reenactments in a medieval atmosphere. The Church of San Giusto, built around the 10th century, is nestled between the walls and one of the main gates of the village. This Romanesque building, decorated with Byzantine influences, houses the Museum of Sacred Art, where important works of art and objects related to the liturgy are on display. Other churches in the village are also of particular interest: the Church of Madonna di Sopra la Porta, dating back to the 18th century and located in the center of the village, contains a 16th-century painting dedicated to the Immaculate Conception with Child. No less fascinating is the Church of the Holy Cross.

Finally, the ancient public fountains of Suvereto, such as those of the Angels and Belvedere, are worth a visit. They were once used for water supplies and bear witness to daily life in past eras.
