A Journey Between the Sea and Medieval Villages
An evocative stretch of coastline that stretches from Livorno to the promontory of Piombino, embracing numerous municipalities in the province of Livorno. Along the Etruscan Coast are some of Tuscany’s most renowned seaside resorts, such as Castiglioncello, San Vincenzo and Marina di Bibbona. Moving inland, you can visit charming historic villages such as Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Sassetta, and Castagneto Carducci.
The name of this coast is closely linked to the presence of numerous Etruscan artifacts, evidence of the life of this ancient civilization in the area. Particularly significant are the testimonies in the area of Populonia, a city founded by the Etruscans, and in the Gulf of Baratti, where today the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia stands. In addition, the history of the area is strongly linked to mining, evidenced by the San Silvestro Archeominerario Park, a place dedicated to the memory and discovery of this tradition.
This area is also an ideal destination for nature lovers, thanks to the presence of protected areas such as the Coastal Park of Rimigliano and Sterpaia, perfect for hiking, biking or horseback riding. The clear, unspoiled sea of the Etruscan Coast is among the most beautiful in Tuscany and boasts beaches ideal for a carefree vacation. The area is also famous for the production of fine wines. Follow the charming cypress-lined avenue from the Oratory of San Guido along the Via Aurelia to reach Bolgheri, home of some of Tuscany’s most prestigious wines, such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia.
