BB La Vecchia Fonte

The Biancane Nature Park

Energy bubbling up from the bowels of the earth in Monterotondo Marittimo.

A place where the power of geothermal energy has shaped the land, transforming the natural landscape and dyeing the Metalliferous Hills with extraordinary colors.
You can REACH this fantastic and unique place by staying at the Guest House la Vecchia Fonte in Campiglia Marittima. This unique corner is distinguished by curious steam emissions, seething mud pools and white tones that mark the terrain, creating a surreal setting almost out of time. It is also the habitat of unusual flora, which has arisen thanks to the special climatic and geological conditions of the area, making it a unique and fascinating environment. In order to enhance this precious geothermal heritage, the Municipality of Monterotondo Marittimo, in collaboration with Enel Green Power, has designed an immersive itinerary through these striking natural phenomena. The itinerary also includes a stop in the historic industrial area, witness to the first boric acid extractions from the thermal waters in the early 1800s. The adventure begins at Lagone Cerchiaio, an emblematic place where, in 1777, Hubert Francesco Hoefer, court pharmacist, first discovered traces of boric acid in the geothermal springs.

This starting point marks the beginning of a real journey into the beating heart of the earth. Along the way, it is possible to be amazed by unique natural spectacles: vapors emerging elegantly from rock crevices, boiling water gushing from underground, and an extraordinary play of colors ranging from bright red to yellow ochre to brilliant white. A scenery that is hard to forget. The visit culminates with a stop at the MUBIA Multimedia Museum, perfect for those who want to learn more about geothermal exploration in an interactive and engaging way. Here you can immerse yourself in an exciting virtual journey into the depths of the Earth, up to 7 km below the surface, thanks to the innovative GeoNave. A unique experience that further enriches the visit to the Biancane, revealing the most remote secrets of this extraordinary natural landscape.
