Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia
The Park is about 10 km away from BB Vecchia Fonte located 400 meters from the medieval village of Campiglia Marittima, between the hills of the Piombino promontory and the Gulf of Baratti lies an ancient history that tells of the origins of a great Tuscan people: the Etruscans. Populonia, one of their cities directly overlooking the sea, is a fascinating place surrounded by an extraordinary natural environment. Here, between the 6th and 4th centuries B.C., the main center of iron production in the Mediterranean developed, thanks tohematite, an iron ore found on the nearby island of Elba.
The Archaeological Park stretches from the clear sea of the Gulf of Baratti, where the tombs of princely warriors are located, to the Mediterranean vegetation that hides the rock-cut tombs, continuing to the Acropolis overlooking the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
In the lower part are two necropolises from the Etruscan period, calcarenite quarries, and industrial areas where hematite from the island of Elba was processed into iron ingots. At the top begins a visit to the acropolis of Populonia, with its temples, buildings, mosaics and streets from the Roman phase, along with the remains of early Etruscan dwellings and the walls that surrounded the city on the sea side.
